Dock Gates Buying Guide

Guard the edge before something goes over it. OSHA's general industry rule 1910.28(b)(1)(i) requires fall protection at any unprotected side or edge four feet or more above the level below, and 1910.29(b)(1) sets a guardrail top rail at 42 inches, plus or minus 3 inches, above the walking surface. An open dock door or a mezzanine loading opening is exactly that edge, and the gate is what keeps the opening usable without leaving it unguarded. OSHA lets a gate or chains stand in for a removable guardrail section at a hoisting or loading opening only when it provides a level of safety equivalent to a guardrail, so a gate that leaves a gap or sits too low does not satisfy the rule. Every gate here is steel with a safety-yellow powder coat so it reads as a barrier at a glance.

Three mechanisms, one job. The Vestil Economical Safety Swing Gates pivot horizontally across the opening on a hinge post and are the lowest-cost way to close a span, starting around $257. Order to the opening width. Measure the clear opening and order the gate to it, because a gate that stops short leaves the gap OSHA is asking you to close. The swing gates cover the widest range, from a 2 ft pedestrian opening up to 11 ft, so an odd or oversized dock door usually has a swing answer. The lift gates come in 6, 8, and 10 ft widths sized to standard dock doors. The swivel gates run 8, 9, and 10 ft and top out near $799 for the widest pair. If your opening falls between listed sizes, size up and confirm the swing clearance, never down.

Where the gate sits in the dock plan. A gate protects the edge; it does not bridge the gap or hold the trailer, and those are separate purchases across the loading dock equipment hub. Pair the gate with the rest of your edge and traffic protection under dock safety, and remember the gate only works if it is closed by default, so a spring-assisted or self-closing habit beats one that relies on a worker remembering. On the working side of a loading dock OSHA does allow work without a fall-protection system in narrow, trained circumstances, but for the routine open edge the gate is the simple, inspectable answer.
