Rescue & Recovery Kits Buying Guide

Start with what a compliant kit has to include. OSHA defines a retrieval system as a retrieval line, a chest or full-body harness, and a lifting device or anchor used for non-entry rescue. On top of that, a mechanical device has to be available to retrieve personnel from vertical permit spaces more than 5 ft deep, which covers most manholes, wet wells, and tank entries. A kit from this collection gives you the anchor structure and, in the higher trims, the mechanical retrieval device already matched to it. The entrant still wears the harness, and someone competent still runs the attendant role at the opening. What the kit removes is the guesswork of pairing a random winch to a random tripod and hoping the ratings and brackets line up.

Tripod or davit, matched to the opening. The Megapod tripod is the default for a central, roughly round opening on flat, stable ground: the three legs splay out around the hole and put the anchor point directly over it. It sets up fast and breaks down into a bag. The Megadavit earns its place where a tripod cannot stand: a side entry, an opening tight against a wall, a vessel you have to reach over the lip of, or a spot with no floor room for splayed legs. The davit arm cantilevers out over the edge and rotates, so you can hoist a casualty straight up the shaft and then swing them clear of the hole onto solid ground before lowering. If your entries are all standard manholes, buy the tripod. If any of them are awkward, the davit's reach is what you are paying for.

Basic, Recovery, and Deluxe: read the box contents. The three trims are not cosmetic. A Basic kit is the structure alone, the tripod or the davit arm with its mast and base, meant for a crew that already owns its retrieval hardware. A Recovery kit adds a 60 ft 3-way rescue retrieval SRL-R with its mounting bracket, so you have fall arrest plus an integral crank to winch someone up after a fall. A Deluxe kit adds that SRL-R and a separate 60 ft material or personnel winch, which lets you power a worker down and back up on one line while the SRL-R stays clipped as an independent backup. For active man-riding entry, the Deluxe is the honest choice. Recovery suits a standby non-entry rescue setup where nobody is being lowered under power.

Pick the Megadavit base for your mount point. The Megadavit is modular: one cantilever arm and mast, four ways to anchor it. A floor mount receiver is set permanently into concrete and is the cheapest per station once it is in, ideal for a tank or vault you service on a schedule. A wall mount bracket fixes the mast to a vessel or structural wall where floor space is gone. The H-base is a portable weighted freestanding frame that needs no drilling and travels between sites, at the cost of more setup weight. The hitch mount slots into a 2 in vehicle receiver so a mobile crew carries its anchor on the truck. The column mast comes in 36 in and 54 in lengths to set working height, and the boom arm offers three adjustment positions for reach over the edge.

Height and reach on the Megapod. The tripod comes in 7 ft and 10 ft working heights, and there is an adjustable model with dual built-in pulleys and a storage bag for one-person transport. Taller is not automatically better. A 10 ft head gives you more retraction clearance above the opening and a steeper, cleaner haul line, which matters on a deep vertical rescue, but it needs the overhead room to stand and it is heavier to carry and pitch. A 7 ft tripod is faster to set, fits low headroom, and handles the majority of shallow manhole work. Size the head height to the deepest space you actually enter and the clearance above it, not to a spec number.

The SRL and the winch do different jobs. A 3-way rescue retrieval SRL-R is first a self-retracting lifeline: it pays out and retracts as the worker moves and locks on a fall, then switches to a retrieval mode where you crank the casualty up. A personnel winch is a powered raise-and-lower for routine, controlled man-riding entry and exit. The reason the Deluxe kit carries both is that they cover each other: the worker rides the winch, and the SRL-R stays clipped as the fall-arrest and backup retrieval line on its own anchor point. The assisted-rescue and retrieval components here are built to ANSI/ASSP Z359.4, the standard covering winches, SRLs with integral rescue capability, and the rest of a one-to-two-person rescue system.

Capacity, material, and the standards to check. The KStrong tripods are aluminum alloy rated to 310 lb, which is the ANSI personnel rating covering the worker plus tools and clothing, so verify your heaviest entrant with full gear against it. The davit structure is rated higher for material handling as well as personnel use. Everything in this collection is personnel-rated fall protection under the ANSI Z359 family, not a material-only hoist repurposed for people. Round out the station with the 20 ft rescue ladder for access or emergency egress and the ANSI spreader bar with snap hooks when a stretcher or rescue basket needs a balanced two-point pickup. Confirm the harness and connectors you already run are compatible before the first entry, and keep the manufacturer inspection interval on the SRL and winch.
