Cabinets & Shelving Buying Guide

What the door buys. Open shelving and a closed cabinet solve different problems, and the split decides most of this page. A shelf is faster to load, cheaper per cubic foot, and fine for parts that do not care about dust or wandering hands. A cabinet adds three things a shelf cannot: it keeps grinding dust and overspray off precision parts, it locks, and it can be built to hold materials a bare shelf legally cannot. Valley Craft builds its cabinets from 12 gauge steel, about 0.104 inch, roughly twice the plate of a light-duty office cabinet, which is why the welded bodies carry around 1,000 lb of shelves and drawers without racking out of square. Match the door to the contents: the more a part costs, attracts theft, or falls under a fire code, the stronger the case for a cabinet over the shelf beside it.

Bin, shelf, and drawer cabinets. Most of the range organizes small parts behind a door. Valley Craft's bin and shelf cabinets combine hanging bins with adjustable shelves from $1,095 to $2,895, and the deep door versions hang a second bank of bins on the doors so the count roughly doubles in the same footprint, from $1,295. Where you need to see stock without opening up, clear-view cabinets put windows in the doors from $1,095. Drawer builds, including the deep door drawer cabinet at $2,895, suit dense hardware and tooling that a shelf would bury. A pegboard cabinet at $1,795 hangs hand tools where the door normally wastes space, and the half cabinet at $1,295 tucks under a bench. For the heaviest contents, the heavy-duty 12 gauge cabinet steps capacity up to about 1,900 lb at $1,995 to $2,545. Loose hand tools and cases live next door in tool storage and workbenches.

Locking cabinets: control who opens the door. When the problem is who opens the door rather than what sits behind it, the electronic locking cabinets replace a keyed cam lock with a keypad. Valley Craft builds two lines, the industrial electronic locking cabinet from $1,545 and the deluxe from $1,571 up to about $2,095, both on the same 12 gauge welded body rated near 1,000 lb. A code beats a key on a shared floor: you issue and revoke access without recutting anything, and there is no key to lose into a machine. These earn their premium anywhere calibrated gauges, controlled consumables, or high-theft stock need managed access on the door rather than a padlock a bolt cutter defeats in seconds.

Flammable liquids: OSHA 1910.106(d)(3). Flammable liquids are the first regulated corner. Vestil's flammable safety cabinets run from $593 to $4,508 by capacity, and they exist to satisfy OSHA 1910.106(d)(3), which caps a single storage cabinet at 60 gallons of Category 1, 2, or 3 flammable liquids or 120 gallons of Category 4, and calls for self-latching doors and conspicuous FLAMMABLE KEEP FIRE AWAY labeling. Size the cabinet to your peak on-hand volume, not today's, because splitting the same gallons across two cabinets is often how a plant stays under the per-cabinet cap. Manual-close and self-close door styles both qualify; self-close is the safer default anywhere a door gets left open during a busy shift. Keep the cabinet away from exits and ignition sources, and leave the factory bungs in place unless you have vented to code.

Compressed gas cylinders: OSHA 1910.253(b). Compressed gas is the second regulated corner. Valley Craft's gas cylinder storage cabinets, $995 to $1,995, cage and secure cylinders against the rule most welding shops trip over: OSHA 1910.253(b) requires oxygen cylinders in storage to sit at least 20 feet from fuel-gas cylinders and combustibles, or be separated by a noncombustible barrier at least 5 feet high with a fire-resistance rating of at least one-half hour. A divided cabinet supplies that barrier in a footprint a 20-foot separation cannot, which is the whole reason to buy one. Whatever you store, chain or strap every cylinder upright, cap it when the regulator is off, and keep the cabinet ventilated and clear of ignition sources.

The shelving beside the cabinets. The open-storage half of the collection covers what does not need a door. Valley Craft's heavy-duty 12 gauge welded shelving carries about 2,500 lb per shelf from $760 to $1,495, built from the same plate as its cabinets. For hand-loaded parts, Vestil's powder coated boltless shelving assembles without fasteners and reconfigures as the stockroom changes, $408 to $502, and it is designed and tested under ANSI MH28.2. The capacity on the sheet is per shelf with the load spread evenly, so derate concentrated loads, keep the heaviest material low, and anchor tall units to the wall. Forklift-loaded pallets belong on pallet racking and accessories, and the rack guards that protect any of it live in protective barriers.
