Short answer: A spreader bar is a rigid beam hung under the hook that holds two or more lifting points apart. It keeps the sling legs vertical instead of angled, which protects the load from crushing forces and keeps long or wide items level and stable during a lift.
When slings pull in at a steep angle, they squeeze the load and multiply tension in each leg. A spreader bar holds the pick points apart so the slings pull straight down, which is safer for both the load and the rigging.
Long, wide, or delicate loads that would be crushed or tip under angled slings. If a straight vertical pull matters, a spreader bar earns its place.
